New Format, Who Dis?
As you can see, I’ve decided to play with the format a bit and make use of the “caption” feature to put each photo’s notes directly underneath it. I’m hoping it will make things a bit easier to read. I’m also hoping that doing things this way doesn’t break SubStack’s post editor. Fingers crossed. Anyway, since we’re doing new things, I thought it would be an excellent time to try out another new-ish SubStack feature, the poll!
So, here it is:
Now that that’s out of the way…how was your week?
Things have been uneventful, but in a calm-before-the-storm way. My teaching semester starts next week and the prevailing sentiment amongst my friends and co-workers is that we need more time to prepare. I suspect that sentiment would remain no matter how much time we actually had.
But as far as this project is concerned, it was a good week. I got outside to a variety of locales and got a few shots I’m pleased with. As I noted above, the sunset photo from March 31st is a particular favorite. I feel like it highlights the cherry blossoms without being the same photo we’ve all seen a thousand times. I like that there are people present to give the photo life without intruding on their privacy. I also like that the mountains are visible in the far background…yeah, I just really like this one.
I’m also fond of the final shot from this week, the one from April 4. As I’ve talked about before, it’s hard to find scenic shots in Japan that don’t feature at least one thing that’s man-made so it’s better sometimes to just lean into it. I feel like this photo shows a good contrast between the natural and the man-made, even if I have to acknowledge that that particular tree has been cultivated and placed by someone, generations ago. Does that make the tree man-made, too? Kinda?
As I noted above, we’ve had a weird hanami season. The trees seem to be confused as to when they were supposed to open up all the flowers so I'm not sure how much longer the white and pink cherry blossoms will linger. No fear though, there will be other, greener sites to come in the following weeks. I’ll make sure to document as much as I can.
Thanks for reading.
